About cheapsheep.com

The evolution of cheapsheep.com came about in 2001 when my husband and I traveled to Europe. We dedicated six months to living and learning in a new country. With a packed suitcase (and a couple of boxes) we moved to London. After a rather lengthy search we found a flat in South Kensingston — chosen because it is centrally located between Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. Then off we went!

For the next two months we traveled eastern and western Europe. Each time we returned to our “base” in London, we searched the libraries, internet, and newspapers for more “travel deals.” Soon we realized that the travel deal of a lifetime was right there in England. There was so much to do. And they spoke English! So we dug in our heels and looked into taking classes, visiting museums, and availing ourselves to all of the social and cultural delights that England has to offer. One of the first things we did was to attend a Farm Equipment Show in London. (My husband is a hobby farmer.) Well lo and behold, there were sheep there! WHO’D A THOUGHT? Just then the light bulb came on — where there are sheep there is wool — and so the hunt began. And it was an exhaustive hunt at that.

Linda DipertFor the next four months we never left England, and we saw most every corner of the island. The best part was that we were able to make contact with several of the finest woolen mills in Great Britain. I told them our (and that’s the collective “our”) story about rug hooking. It was difficult for them to understand how “we” could even think of washing, let alone dyeing their beautiful woolens. Fortunately, I had a copy of Rug Hooking Magazine (which gave me a little legitimacy), but still they chose to think I was a bit under the weather rather than believe that I was really going to wash, dye, and then rip up this gorgeous, luscious, and softer-than-soft wool. But over time and by visiting with each of them several times, they began to understand and were willing to help.

cheapsheep.com has selected three of the finest woolen mills in Great Britain and has obtained an exclusive supplier agreement with each of them. They design and manufacturer wool fabric for such famous brands as Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Chanel, Talbot’s, Tocca, Hermes and many more, so you are guaranteed to receive the finest quality rug hooking and braiding wool available.

Now we go to England several times a year on buying trips to hand select wool which always includes plenty of solids, plaids, herringbones, checks, and assorted textures. The wool is shipped in 40’ containers — the same kind you see on train flatbeds — about 15,000 yards.

When it comes time for the mills to fill the container they will often use shorter lengths, 1-5 yards, to fill the nooks and crannies.

Your satisfaction is always 100% guaranteed. All quantities are subject to availability, and the price could vary according to the exchange rate.

Please check the other links on this site for information regarding rug camps, patterns, books, ordering wool, and other areas of interest — and come back often as the site will grow and change. Check out our new shipment of wool and our special clearance prices.

Thank you for your visit and we look forward to serving you!
